Annual Country Report 2011 – Sri Lanka

Introduction to the Country & Projects

The end of the prolonged conflict in Sri Lanka has given a way towards the socio-economic development in the country. Although the literacy rate in Sri Lanka is high in the South Asia Region, rural children face severe difficulties in attaining their educational goal. In spite of free education system in Sri Lanka, providing standard education for rural children still remains a big burden for rural parents due to various factors including poverty and unequal distribution of resources. Due to the insufficient income opportunities for rural communities, school enrolment has dropped. The families need opportunities to reinstate their regular village-level livelihoods as well as income generating activities.

Through the ongoing support in 2010, Good Neighbors Sri Lanka has supported 3 CDP programs, mainly in the areas of Child Development and Community Development. 2,932 children and 2,273 families have been benefiting from the programs.

Programs/ Projects and outcome in 2010

An internal review was conducted in December 2010 analyzing 3 Community Development Programs and 4 child sponsorship programs. Cooperatives have been found to increase the income of the beneficiaries and to build relevant capacities of communities. The success rate of livelihood projects in Matara and Embilipitiya has been estimated at about 75%. With a relatively small investment per child beneficiary and community, considerable results have been achieved with regard to improving education and livelihoods. Sponsorship program for children and an establishment of Coops through Community Development projects are appropriate and effective in the rural context to enhance educational opportunities and provide livelihood prospects to the most deprived social groups of poverty stricken regions in Sri Lanka.

Thank you message with 2011 plan

Ayubowan,

GN Sri Lanka would be grateful for your continuous support. With your tremendous support, 2,932 most deprived children could attend the school regularly and improve their education. Also, over 2,273 community members have been involved in sustainable livelihood by having membership for community development projects. We have planned to expand our current programs in 2011, which both children and communities benefit directly. Additional 2,000 children could get the diverse program and services in 2011. GNI, in addition to direct support for children and community, will actively support in achieving the goals of CRC, opportunity of education and income generation programs for parents. All projects of GNI will implement with the direct participation of community leaders, like-minded organizations and local authorities. Cooperatives formed with the participation of beneficiaries are further strengthening in 2011 in order to implement the community based projects independently.

We want to express a big thanks to you who helped make these amazing changes during 2010. We ask for your continuous interest and participation.
