CHAD

1. Chad Headquarters Office

Chad is bordered by the Central African Republic to the south, Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, and Cameroon, Nigeria to the southwest. Because Chad is a land-locked country and most of the area has a desert climate, the country is known as the “Dead Heart of Africa.”

Like Sudan and Somalia, Chad is one of the poorest countries in the world. Good Neighbors Chad was registered to the Chad government as an international non-governmental organization in 2007 and launched its first project in Walia in 2008. The organization gave scholarships to 2,000 children from low-income families and offers literacy education to enhance the quality of basic education as well as increase educational opportunities in the region.

2. Walia Community Development Project

Good Neighbors Chad started the Walia community development project in 2007, supporting school supplies, tuition, and medical services for children, while providing literacy programs and health education for local community members.

3. Amnabak CDP

In the community of Amnabak, Good Neighbors focuses on educational opportunities for children and literacy education for community members; we support tuition and school supplies for children and provide literacy classes for adults. In order to enhance sanitation and waste disposal problems in the region, Good Neighbors supports hygiene and sanitation workshops, and we also installed toilets inside sponsored children’s homes.

Good Neighbors also built mills inside communities and provide tools and technical training so residents can learn how to make a living and increase their income.

4. Kaliwa CDP

Good Neighbors supports tuition and school supplies for children in Kaliwa to help increase their educational opportunities. Public clinics and health and hygiene classes are also offered for children and community members in the region. In an effort to increase the residents’ incomes, Good Neighbors supports technical training and fishing.

5. Paris Congo II CDP

Good Neighbors supports tuition and school supplies for children in an effort to increase educational opportunities in Paris Congo II. In addition, public clinics, health education workshops, and newly installed toilets are available to children and community members.

6. Amtoukuiy Community Development Project

The Amtoukuiy community development project launched in 2011. Around 68% of the population lives on less than $1/day and the enrollment rate of elementary school students is 56%, while the enrollment rate of middle school students is only 38%. Good Neighbors Chad has supported 70% of the school tuition for 500 local children, and has also provided literacy education for adults.

The organization also works to improve sanitation in the region, promotes a healthy environment by planting trees, and invests in community members by giving them small business loans.

7. Abena Atrone CDP

Abena Atrone is a slum, with 6% of the population suffering from leprosy. Sixty-eight percent of the population lives on less than $1/day and most people are suffering from severe poverty and disease. Even worse, infrastructure such as roads, schools, public clinics, and water systems in the area are poorly built, creating a dangerous living environment.

In an effort to improve living conditions, Good Neighbors has been installing wells and toilets, and offering medical check-ups and health education classes. Good Neighbors also supports tuition and school supplies for students.

8. Gassi CDP

Good Neighbors Chad has been supporting school tuition and building classrooms for 478 students in Gassi. The organization has also built wells and toilets, and ran environmental clean-up campaigns to improve the region’s sanitation conditions. Moreover, providing medical care and health education programs will allow community members to live in a clean, healthy environment.

9. Kamnda CDP

In an effort to improve child education in the Kamnda area, Good Neighbors has operated libraries and given scholarships to children. Medical services, portable water systems, and health education programs for local people have put into place to provide a clean and healthy environment for residents. Small loan business projects are also available to help local people increase their incomes.

10. Koundoul CDP

While the elementary school enrollment rate in Koundoul is approximately 60%, the enrollment rate of middle school students is only 10% because many students drop out by that grade level. In response, Good Neighbors has supported tuition for 620 local children and provided school materials to help ease educational costs.

The help community members stay healthy, Good Neighbors also provides medical services, portable water systems, and new toilets. Small business loans and agricultural training are also available for local people to help increase their incomes.

11. Karwai CDP/Farcha Attere CDP

Approximately 75% of the children in Karwai have to work in order to survive, and the rate of child marriages is more than 73%. Because of this, the enrollment rate of elementary school students is only about 27% and the middle school enrollment rate is only 10%.

Good Neighbors started a community development project in Karwai back in 2009 and has since then been supporting 70% of school tuition for students and providing them with school supplies. Because of this These projects promote increased enrollments rates in elementary and middle schools and quality improvement of education in the community.

Also, medical services for children and the installation of wells and toilets also enable local people to live in a clean, healthy environment.

12. Ali Garga Community Development Project

Good Neighbors Chad has been collaborating with the local community on a variety of projects since November 2010. In response to the high rate of child marriages (70%) and child labor (50%) in the region, Good Neighbors has supported school tuition, expanded educational opportunities, and run campaigns to improve awareness of child marriage and labor.

Good Neighbors also installed wells and toilets for public use, and provided literacy classes and job training for women.

13. Mandalia Community Development Project

Good Neighbors Chad has launched a community development project in Mandalia since November 2010 and is currently supporting 70% of school tuition for students. Water wells and toilets were built for local residents and job trainings is also available to help families increase their incomes.
